Make sure you have made legitimate melds with every card you have before declaring, and that doing so won't expose you to large point losses in the event that your opponents have strong hands. Choosing the right moment to declare is also very important. It might be a good idea to declare early if you think your opponents are almost finished with their hands or if they have been drawing cards from the draw pile a lot. It might be wise to wait before declaring, on the other hand, if you think you can strengthen your hand even more by keeping some cards for a later round.
