A player can learn important details about their hand and strategy each time they discard a card. Players can learn which cards their opponents are collecting or attempting to avoid by closely observing which cards are being discarded. By using this information, one can decide for themselves which cards to keep & which to discard. An opponent might be attempting to form sets with high-value cards or constructing a sequence in a different suit if, for example, they routinely discard low-value cards from a given suit. In these situations, it could be prudent to discard cards that could aid them in finishing their melds or to hold onto cards from that suit to prevent their progress. Moreover, you can greatly improve your hand while also impeding your opponent's if they discard a card that might help you finish a sequence.
