You can better predict their moves by being aware of the tendencies of certain players, who may prefer forming sequences over sets or vice versa. A high-scoring hand that requires fewer melds might be the goal of an opponent if, for instance, they routinely discard low-value cards while holding onto high-value ones. Also, keeping track of the cards that have been picked up or thrown away in your mind can give you important information about what is still in play.
  • For example, discarding a K♦ and an A♦ that you are holding onto but have no immediate use for could unintentionally help an opponent who might be attempting to complete a sequence involving those cards. Consider throwing away lower-value cards that don't support your present plan instead. Keeping a balance between offensive and defensive discarding is another smart tactic.
