Teach started his maritime career as a privateer in the Caribbean, attacking Spanish and French ships, during Queen Anne's War (1701–1714). Like many other privateers, Teach turned to piracy following the end of the war in 1714. He joined the crew of renowned pirate captain Benjamin Hornigold and advanced fast to become his protégé.
