  • While a run is made up of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, a set is made up of three or four cards of the same rank but different suits. Depending on the regulations being followed, each player is dealt a certain number of cards at the start of the game, typically seven or ten. One face-up card initiates the discard pile, while the remaining cards form a draw pile. The players alternately draw a card from the discard pile or the draw pile, then discard one card from their hand. The game goes on until one player declares Rummy! and successfully melds all of their cards into valid sets and runs.
